Wet Walking Again![]() Ploughed fields are still awkward to walk on so here is a variation of lane walking. Start in Station Road and walk along the Railway Walk as far as Hook Lane bridge, go down the lane to the Layham Road and turn left. Walk as far as Mill Lane and turn right. At the bottom of the lane there is a "Private" notice. This applies to cars, not to walkers. Continue past the mill and across the Brett, noticing the weather vane and the huge rusty mill wheel. The path takes you to Church Lane. Turn right for a few yards, then go left over a stile with an FP sign. In 40 yards you reach another stile and FP sign. You are now on probably the clearest footpath in the district. A narrow strip of grass runs between two fields. It is well used so the grass is always short. Follow the path to Water Farm and pass between the farm buildings on the left and tennis courts in the right to a farm drive. At this point you could continue straight on to the Brett and Shelley (this is planned for later), but we turn right up the drive to the Shelley road and turn right and right again to Lower Layham. Here we could go right, past the Queen's Head to the church, straight on goes to Toppesfield Bridge. A right turn at the church would take us back to Layham Mill to retrace the start of the walk. Or we could in Lower Layham turn left and in several hundred yards, chose as previously described between the lane past the hunt kennels or take the longer road past the gravel pit. Either road will bring us back to Toppesfield Bridge. |
