The Guildhall is a remarkable series of timber-framed buildings dating from the late 14th century to early 15th century. The upper floors project over the ground floor, known as jetties, a sign of wealth and status.

In medieval times this complex was used by five town guilds, as almshouses, shops, woolhall and grammar school. In the last 200 years it has been used as a corset factory, for dances, plays and meetings. More recently the Town Council has returned to the original 1619 council chamber.
